Opportunities
The goal of every lawn owner is a healthy, weed-free, beautifully green lawn. It enhances the appearance of your home and provides a great space for various activities. Here’s a list of essential lawn care tasks to help you maintain or achieve a green lawn.
Fertilize
Ensure your grass receives proper nutrients for healthy growth and the green color you desire. Fertilize in the spring and fall with slow-release fertilizers, which extend the feeding period, reduce the risk of burning the grass, and require fewer applications.
De-Thatch
Thatch is a layer of fibrous material that builds up on the soil surface. While a layer less than half an inch thick can be beneficial, thicker thatch prevents water entry and harbors unwanted pests. Remove excessive thatch to promote healthy grass.
Mow Appropriately
Mowing too closely and irregularly weakens grass blades. Mow at regular intervals and keep the grass between 6 and 8 cm (2.5-3.5 inches). Mowing the day after watering can help with grass recovery.
Liming
In the Maritime Provinces, acid rain from pollutants affects soil pH. Liming your lawn counteracts this acidity, restoring proper growing conditions.
Watering
Grass needs appropriate watering. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the grass to dry out between waterings. If the lawn appears dry, it likely needs water.
Aerate
Aerating your lawn improves drainage and allows grass roots easier access to water and nutrients. Aerate at least once a year, ideally in the spring and fall.
Consider Seeding
Grass blades have a limited lifespan, so it’s important to seed new grass regularly. Thick grass helps choke out unwanted weeds and ensures a lush, green lawn.
